Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Roys Customers Help To Raise £1,255 in Roys Christmas Charity Raffle
In the lead up to Christmas Roys has held a charity raffle to raise money for the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals Charity to go to the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Customer's shopping in our Wroxham stores purchased tickets from our Department Store for the chance to win the many prizes on offer, and the ticket sales raised £1,255.
The NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at the Norfolk & Norwich hospital is a specialist regional unit that receives babies from across the region and further afield, caring for more than 850 babies a year. It provides specialist level three neonatal, medical and surgical intensive care.
Roys is delighted to be able to help the NNUH NICU department with this donation. They do amazing work that's incredibly important to the families it helps, and we're proud to be a part of that. As our charity of the year for our Wroxham Department Store, Garden Centre & Toy Shop the department will also be receiving the proceeds from the sales of carrier bags from those stores, so we'll be making another donation to them in the new year.Jo SymondsRoys Marketing Manager

Rekindling A Relationship 98 Years In The Making
After a break of many decades Roys (Wroxham) Ltd and Barnwell Print Ltd are rekindling their relationship to work together. Roys flagship store based in Hoveton and Barnwell Print Ltd based in Aylsham can trace their initial correspondence and working relationship back to 1924.
Alfred and Arnold Roy founded Roys in 1895 when they opened their first store in Coltishall. Soon after the success of the first store they chose Dereham and Hoveton to expand the business. By 1924 Roys was thriving with a fleet of former Royal Mail Trojan vans used for deliveries and opening a new bakery in Coltishall.
Barnwell Print was established in 1840 with the family relocating from Hull to Norfolk in 1908. Frederick Charles Barnwell (1888-1968) and Arnold Roy initiated a business relationship, with orders of prints being traced back to 1924. Arnold would note down what he would like the poster, order form or leaflet to say with a rough layout and Frederick would set to work to produce a top-quality print for the stores. Arnold and Frederick became friends and would enjoy sailing on the Broads together.
The pair worked together well into the late 1930’s and it is unknown when this ended, it may have been during the tumultuous time of the second world war where a lot of changes were brought to Roys.
Barnwell Print Ltd continued to work through the decades with an expansion in the 1970’s and fighting through adversity when a fire damaged the premises in 1982. Today Barnwell’s is the oldest family run printing business in the UK. With fourth generation Julian and Lincoln as owners and Directors, driving the business to have the best environmental ethics they can. With recent continued investment to replace two older diesel vehicles with two new Electric Vehicles.
Julian and Lincoln’s love of diving and passion for nature and the planet has led to global warming and CO2 emissions being at the forefront of their minds when considering how the business operates which is why in 2012 they became Norfolk’s first certified carbon balanced publication printer. Carbon balancing is delivered by The World Land Trust who offset emissions through the preservation of forests which are both threatened, and considered to be of very high conservation importance. The benefits are much wider than just carbon reduction, protecting local flora and fauna.
Through this scheme Barnwell will work with Roys to offset all unavoidable production carbon emissions on their printed products, including the paper which is sourced from managed and sustainable forests specifically produced for the printing industry.
We are very excited to be working with Roy’s once again, who are such a well-known forward thinking local family business. As a business we try to bring more to the table than just high-quality printing and believe our tried and tested carbon balancing service is a good opportunity to make a difference to the environment for the future generations.Julian BarnwellDirector, Barnwell Print
Roys is over the moon to be working with Barnwell Print once again. We are extremely proud of our heritage and it is exciting to be working with a company that Arnold Roy himself worked with all those years ago. Not only do we have this historical connection but the environmental ethics that the company has are very close to our heart too. Roys are continuously looking at ways to limit their carbon footprint and how to lessen their impact on the Earth. By using Barnwell Print for our February housewares leaflet we have managed to offset 1001 kilos of carbon and preserve 191sqm of critically threatened tropical rain forest. We are looking forward to future projects with the Barnwell team.Jo SymondsRoys Marketing Manager

2021 In Review - A Great Year For Helping The Community
During 2021 Roys is pleased to have been able to help a great many charities and good causes both locally and nationally. In total Roys was able to help 179 great causes, ranging from bigger charities such as the East Anglian Air Ambulance, Macmillan Cancer Support & The Big C, to smaller local causes such as scout groups, schools, & community schemes. Many of the causes helped were through raffle prize donations, meaning many of the donations will have hopefully helped to raise even more money for charity too.
In total we've raised £45,804, an increase of £12,000 on last year! This includes money donated through our MADL (Making A Difference Locally) fund, the plastic bag charge, raffle prize donations, and other money-raising such as in store collections, wearing fancy dress on special days and donating a share of the profits from the sale of selected products.
The plastic bag charge was increased from 5p to 10p in May, raising a total of £29,156 and largely responsible for the total increase compared to last year. Our stores each have different charities of the year voted on by the staff and those charities will receive a donation equal to the amount that store has raised. In total 10 charities benefitted from the following donations for 2021; £10,378 to East Anglian Air Ambulance (raised by our Wroxham Food Hall, fuel station, DIY Centre, head office and Norwich distribution centre), £4,867 to Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (raised by our Wroxham Department Store, Garden Centre and Roys Toys), £5121 to Priscilla Bacon Hospice (raised by our Bowthorpe store), £1487 to Beccles Men's Shed (raised by our Beccles store), £648 to PACT Animal Sanctuary (raised by our Dereham store), £2033 to MAP (raised by our Magdalen Street store), £851 to Mundesley Volunteer Inshore Lifeboat (raised by our North Walsham store), £1333 to The Bridge Project (raised by our Sudbury store), £2433 to Nelson's Journey (£1675 raised by our Thetford store, and £758 raised by Highway Garden & Leisure).
Our Making A Difference Locally Fund (MADL) has helped 19 great causes with donations ranging from £100 to £1000. Causes helped by this scheme include Wroxham Church Hall, Norfolk & Waveney Mind, Beccles Community Hub, Action For Children, 1st Dereham Scout Group, and The Kernos Centre.
In store actions have raised over £4,000, with staff and customers coming together to help several great charities. This money includes collection pots in-store, as well as money raised by fancy dress days such as Children In Need (£1,462), Christmas Jumper Day (£177), and Wear It Pink Day (£184 for Breast Cancer Now).
Roys also pioneered two new schemes this year to raise money for charities by donating a share of the profits from selected products. In August we donated 20p each from the sales of a range of bee themed product in our homewares leaflet, which raised £500 for Norfolk Wildlife Trust. In November we created a scheme to help local foodbanks and local suppliers where 2p from every locally sourced product wen to a local foodbank and raised £2,400. We're hoping we can build on the success of these schemes by offering similar schemes in 2022.
More information about our local suppliers and how Roys helps charities is available on our Charity & Community page.
