Meet The Team

Paul is the Store Manager and is responsible for the day to day managing of the entire Highway site, including the Department Store, Garden Centre, Plant Area, Nursery, Restaurant & Café.

As Assistant Manager at Highway, Christy helps oversee the day-to-day running of the Restaurant, Café and Foodhall, as well as supporting and developing the team. Having been with Highway for two years, she particularly enjoys creating an environment that customers want to come back to and getting to know the regulars along the way.

The run-up to Christmas is always one of the biggest challenges, with events, busy periods and regular trade all happening at once. Good planning, clear communication and a positive attitude help keep everything on track – along with getting into the festive spirit! For Christy, one of the most important things is creating a happy, welcoming atmosphere. When the team are enjoying their jobs and genuinely care about what they do, it makes a big difference to the customers too.

As Assistant Manager, Lance helps develop and keep the Garden Centre, Plant Area, Nursery and Aquatics departments running smoothly. Having been part of the Highway team for seven years, one of the most rewarding parts of his role is developing the teams and seeing people grow in confidence in their roles. He also palys a big part in creating Highway’s magical Christmas grotto, working with a great team to bring it to life from scratch each year.

Managing several busy and very different departments comes with its own daily challenges, but Lance believes the best approach is to stay calm, positive and focused, while always keeping team development at the heart of what they do. And when it comes to customers, his philosophy is simple: the customer is king and should be at the heart of everything the team does.

Kim and the other members of the Nursery team are responsible for all of the plants we grow at Highway. She's been at the company nearly 40 years and has fond memories of helping her father (Joe High) in the Nursery as a child during school holidays.

The best part of her job is seeing all the bedding & basket plants coming into flower during the spring and her favourite plants are Zonal Geraniums because they always look beautiful and are easy to grow.

Kim's top tips for growing perfect bedding plants are good lighting, the right temperature, good ventilation, the right compost and correct watering. Don't be tempted to plant outside too early, the end of May is ideal and extra time in the greenhouse gives plants more time to reach their full potential.

Gary oversees the day to day running of the Department Store and Food Hall. He's worked for Roys for more than 25 years in various stores, and has been at Highway since it was bought by Roys in 2013.

His favourite parts of his job are interacting with customers and setting up the store for different seasons, best of which is Christmas which is always a big affair at Highway.

Stephen is the Aquatics Senior at Highway and he and the other members of the Aquatics Centre look after all the aquarium and pond fish in store as well as all the other aquatic animals.
